January
January 3-20, 2008 ---Design/Build
in the Dominican Republic
El Rincon,
Dominican Republic
This 17 day design/build adventure will
focus on a rural community project for the Women's Club of the
Future of El Rincon. The class
project will be to create a gathering area where both the local
community and a burgeoning eco-tourist community can congregate.
The design challenge is to make the site inviting for tourist
vehicles that pass by on their way to famously beautiful Rincon
Beach, as well as create a shaded public place for the residents
of El Rincon. The goals of the class are to bring students through
the design/build progression showing how the designing and
building process continually inform each other throughout the
project.
This class will take place in a rural part
of the Dominican Republic; the lodging will be rustic: sleeping in
tents on the beach, limited or no electricity, lots of nature, and
tons of hard work. It will be the experience of a lifetime.
Tuition includes travel within the Dominican Republic, rustic
camping facilities in wall tents, and all meals. Intermediate to
Professional.Tuition: $2,275.

19-21, 2008 --- Design for Climate Change
Warren, Vermont
Comprehensive responses to climate change
require the development of resilient biological and built systems that
are adaptive in the face of shifting of climatic influences. While
most discussion today focuses on reducing the rate of Earth's climatic
change, little attention is being given to the design and development
of buildings and landscapes that can support human livelihood across
wide climatic variations. This course highlights strategies for
creating integrated building and landscape systems that can function
in an age of climate extremes; longer droughts, hotter summers, colder
winters, higher winds, increased pests, heavier precipitation events,
and other patterns that will test our ability to thrive in a place.
Field trips to projects that are developing climate-adaptable human
habitat systems will be a central component of the course.
Participants will also design a landscape-building system in which
they apply course concepts. Major topics covered include microclimate
design, water systems, food systems and architectural strategies. All

24-25, 2008 --- Residential Rainwater & Greywater Harvesting
Asheville, North Carolina
Turn water scarcity into water abundance!
As development grows, formerly vegetated and porous earthen watersheds
are paved over and made impervious. This urban phenomenon creates
scarcity by dehydrating landscapes, increasing downstream flooding,
increasing the heat island effect, and creating sterile living
environments. However, many of these negative effects can be reversed.
This workshop will empower you to turn water scarcity into water
abundance at home, in your neighborhood, and beyond. Learn guiding
principles and practical tools to welcome rainwater and greywater into
your life and landscape. Through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on,
we will overview rainwater and greywater harvesting collection
systems, concepts, and practices, as well as design and install a
residential rainwater and greywater system. You WILL leave this
workshop with the ability and resources to install your own system.
Brad Lancaster will have his books available to sign. http://www.kleiwerks.org/avi/workshop_details.php
